Appearance: Saya has two appearances -- her human form and her monster form. In human form, she appears to be an average young girl, with greenish-brown hair styled to appear as though she has cat ears drooping down from the top of her head. She wears a simple white summer dress and white sandals to match, and has an elegant, slender body. Her monster form, however, is never properly shown by the game, but it is mentioned that she is covered in slime and has tentacles. That is, however, the extent of the description given by canon.

Personality: Saya comes across at first as a sweet, innocent little girl to those who know her, but this is far from the truth. She is a clever, somewhat manipulative individual at times who generally has no qualms about killing, torturing, or modifying humans physically or mentally for her own survival... or even her own entertainment. While it's not impossible for her to be sweet and loving to those she cares for -- i.e. Fuminori -- and despite having a rather amiable disposition, she tends to view most humans in a very impersonal way, mostly as a food source and as test subjects for her experiments. However, those she gets attached to are treated with love and care, and she acts like a true preteen girl around those few individuals. In all cases, she tends to be playful and mischievous, and because of this, it's often difficult to tell whether her motives are to kill you or to simply converse with you. She speaks in a cute, childlike manner, but is surprisingly intelligent -- perhaps even more intelligent than an average human, considering some of the things she can do with that potent intelligence.

Abilities/Strengths: She's able to change to and from a monster form that, as stated before, is rather vaguely depicted, but has slime and tentacles, and has killed and deformed people brutally with no apparent weapons many times before. She is able to perform brain surgery on humans to alter their minds, for better or for worse. Personality-wise, she is very secure with herself, and has about the same mentality as an actual girl her age would have, but underneath, she possesses a much more wise, introspective layer that contains knowledge beyond her assumed years. (Although really, no one knows exactly how old she is.)

Weaknesses: Although physically she's quite formidable, she's not outright impossible to take down; in-game, she was raped at one point by one of her experiments and could do nothing about it despite her strength -- or perhaps didn't think to do anything about it. This also suggests she is a bit immature and possesses flaws that come with said immaturity, like a sense of naivete and a skewed perception of the world and those who live in it. Even with her monster form, she is mortal and can be killed just as a human can, as well.

Notable Possessions: None if you don't count tentacles.

History: Saya's past is rather unclear -- she is supposedly from another dimension, but how she was summoned is unclear even to the man she appeared to, Ougai Masahiko, who was a scholar from Tokyo University Medical Department. His hypothesis was that she appeared in this world to obtain a sense of purpose, as well as to complete her kind's ultimate natural life's goal -- reproduction. According to his thoughts, she arrived here to "take over" prosperous species -- humans -- in order to ultimately change them into monsters like her by "rewriting" their genes using spores that are scattered around the globe by updrafts. Ougai suspected there were parts to her evolutionary process that allowed her to do so successfully, and that it was a part of her life cycle. He also suggested she adapted to the new environment in mind as well as body, and that she had a pleasant disposition to begin with despite her tendency to kill humans. Her race apparently watched humans in particular carefully for an opportunity to prey upon them, in a way, and continue their life cycles in this dimension.

Ougai himself is faced with a bit of a dilemma: to reveal this "discovery", or to send her back to the dimension in which she came from. She appeared to be collecting information on mankind in preparation for her final invasion, and he theorized further that due to the strange instincts of humans, namely their own cycle of reproduction (including romantic feelings), Saya's adaptation to human life was slowed due to her failure to understand this instance of "instinct over logic" when normally it is the other way around with humans. He remembers her reading ancient and modern literature referencing such romance in a desiring way. She tried to understand romantic love as the propagation method of mankind, consequently subconsciously enervating her own reproduction ability. She grew depressed as she finally came to the conclusion that she was incapable of loving someone, unable to relate to humans and properly understand how they themselves functioned in this way.

Saya grows to love Ougai as a father, although her time with him is not touched upon much. He teaches her quite a bit about what he knows medically and scientifically, and he becomes attached to her as well, stating in his hypothesis that he wishes Saya to find love and happiness, and perhaps even the propogation she came to this dimension for.

In time, Ougai passes away. A few years later, Saya visits the room of Sakisaka Fuminori, a university student who had recently been the victim of a car accident that killed his family and left him brain damaged. In an experimental treatment, he has brain surgery done on him, but at a price -- his senses are warped as a result. He views the world as blood and guts, among other grotesque-looking things, and foods that normally appeal to him now taste disgusting. When he sees Saya, she is the only normal-looking thing in his perception, amidst all the gore, and he seizes the chance to have a beacon of support to lean on. He asks Saya to live with him, and she agrees.

Fuminori keeps her in secret in his house, and she becomes very attached to him, and he to her. She, however, continues her survival method of feasting on humans. When Saya kills one of Fuminori's friends, he winds up tasting the remains and finding them delicious. He keeps them in his refrigerator to eat later. The rest of his friends, however, begin to grow uneasy with the disappearance of one of their own.

Soon after, Fuminori returns home to Saya being raped by what he views as a monster, and kills him with an axe. The "monster" turns out to be his next door neighbor, an old artist with a wife and child, and Saya confesses she experimented on his brain to allow him to see things the same way Fuminori sees them. In his blind insanity, he killed his wife and child and began to rape Saya. After he is killed, she tells Fuminori she can reverse the effects of the brain surgery and bring his perception back to normal. She offers him a choice: to do the reversal or not.

This is the turning point for two of the three endings in the game. Fuminori refuses, saying there's nothing left for him there, and that his life is with Saya now, because he loves her. Saya is taken aback by this, but certainly doesn't protest. A few days later, she mentions a rural villa her father, Ougai, used to live in, after seeing it in a photograph in Fuminori's house. Fuminori offers to go there to see if he still lives there, although Saya doubts it. Still, he resolves to travel there, and brings along his former best friend Kouji. He dumps Kouji in a well in a very Ringu-esque scene, until Kouji is rescued by Fuminori's physicial, Ryouko, who has become suspicious that he is hiding something during his routine checkups after the accident.

When Fuminori returns, he finds one of his female friends, You, who has a crush on him, having been turned into a monster (as he is able to see her normally, instead of as a mass of blood and gore) and tortured to the point of being broken, conditioned to be a slave. Saya says she wanted to keep her as a "pet" for Fuminori and herself, as she views them as being a couple. Fuminori, as far off the deep end as he seems to be, does not object, and they engage in a threesome to "break in" poor You. It is around this point that Saya is pulled into Econtra.

(Although she is OU and originally does not possess the ability to transform into a human, to minimize confusion and complications with canon, she is being given the ability to turn into a human from her monster form in the Econtra world.)
